The
Minnesota Speech Coaches Association is an organization
comprised of speech coaches from throughout Minnesota.
Its role is to represent speech coaches in a variety of ways.
Because of the diversity of schools, programs, and coaches in
Minnesota, the MSCA provides a unifying force and a voice for
the coaches in a many different venues and functions.
The MSCA unites and creates relationships from schools
representing distant geographical areas, Twin Cities metro
area, as well as schools from all over Greater Minnesota;
Class AA and A; large, medium, and small schools; large,
medium, and small teams; veteran coaches and
inexperienced/novice coaches. Member coaches are
organized by competitive section; eight in Class AA and eight
in Class A. Sixteen section representatives serve as
liaisons between the association officers and the members.
The
MSCA, through its membership, officers, and committees, serves
as a policy-making body. Rules changes and other policy
changes go through a process of review and decision by the
organization before being passed on to the Minnesota State
High School League, which recognizes the MSCA as the official
policy-making organization for high school speech in
Minnesota. Association members also serve as the
advisory committees that recommend topics and materials used
in competition each year. Members often communicate in
person during the season, but the MSCA serves as a vehicle for
communication during the off-season and at the CTAM conference
in September and the state tournament in April.
With
the inauguration of the MSCA website in the fall of 2006, the
organization is poised to become an even more dynamic and
active group.
